Knotweed (including Japanese, giant, Bohemian, and Himalayan species in BC) are provincially-regulated invasive plants with major implications for our local ecosystems and infrastructure. These plants can re-sprout from tiny root fragments, requiring special attention including excavation and deep burial during development work involving soil disturbance. While the Japanese knotweed plants pictured from one our sites may appear dead from previous rounds of chemical treatment, think again! These photos compare live, healthy knotweed rhizomes (orange-tinted, wet roots) with the roots of other shrubs growing nearby and will require special disposal requirements. Can you spot the difference? If you think you may have knotweed on your property, it’s important to manage it as early as possible to reduce future costs. Reach out to one of PGL’s Qualified Environmental Professionals and we can discuss management options with you.

PGL recognizes September 30th as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We are committed to ongoing learning and training on Indigenous issues, as specifically outlined in our corporate commitments to Indigenous (Re)conciliation and relationships document. Last week, we kicked off our annual corporate retreat activities by hosting an Indigenous Cultural Awareness training session. PGLers participated in the Blanket Exercise, led by Sara Cook and Donna Hovsepian. The Blanket Exercise is an interactive educational tool designed to foster understanding of the historical and ongoing impact of colonization on Indigenous Peoples in Canada and other regions. The exercise was followed by a debrief session facilitated by Sara and Donna where participants could share their thoughts and reflections. We are thankful to Sara and Donna for leading us through this impactful session. In the spirit of reconciliation, PGL is matching employee donations to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society (IRSSS), a non-profit organization that provides essential services to residential school survivors and their families impacted by intergenerational trauma. We encourage you to join us in supporting this important cause.

PGL’s Ontario team partnered with Nexxgen Environmental to tackle a remediation project at our client’s manufacturing facility in Eastern Ontario. The source of contamination was a former underground fuel storage tank that had leaked into the subsurface nearly 20 years ago. Nestled between a roadway, a building, and the site entrance, the project required innovative solutions. Shoring steel was utilized in the excavation to prevent sloughing and maximize the volume of impacted soils removed. We’re proud to have successfully removed the majority of the impacted soils and to have delivered effective, client-focused solutions alongside our trusted partners at Nexxgen Environmental. #PGLEnvironmental #contaminatedsites #nerdybynature #remediation

Love is in the air! Breeding bird season is upon us, when birds begin their morning serenades to find their mates. Breeding season for songbirds in BC starts in March and carries on through August. Raptors and herons begin breeding and nest building as early as January and may be sensitive to disturbance through to the end of September. If you are a developer and are looking to clear vegetation, demolish old buildings or excavate a seemingly empty lot, it’s best practice to do this work outside the breeding season. If that can’t be avoided, it’s recommended a Qualified Environmental Professional conduct a pre-clearing nest survey. Under the BC Wildlife Act, it’s an offence to injure, molest or destroy an active bird nest without a valid permit. PGL’s team of biologists recently refreshed their birding skills in preparation for the breeding season and are ready to help you with your project needs! #wildlifewednesday #nerdybynature #biologicalservices #pglenvironmental

We celebrated by getting together, sharing good food, and learning more about PGLer-owned small businesses. We were lucky enough to savour Mellissa Labar’s delicious homemade jellies and admire Florence Norton’s beautiful floral greeting cards. Since 2020, PGL has commissioned art to feature on our holiday e-card. The artwork is displayed in one of our offices for staff and visitors to see. This year, we had the honour of working with Adanchilla Pauls Lepine (b. 2004). Pauls Lepine is a 2-Spirit Tahltan and Tlingit Member of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations originally from Haines Junction, Yukon. The name Adanchilla means “strong, powerful little women” in their language. Pauls Lepine has been beading since they were 6 years old and grew up around people who were passionate about art. Pauls Lepine is also a dance member of the Dakhká Khwáan Dancers, a national award-winning Inland Tlingit dance group. Pauls Lepine created a beaded salmon for PGL that includes a belly full of roe. Depicted within the salmon is a caribou and a mountain range. Pauls Lepine home community of Haines Junction, Yukon is well-known for the striking St. Elias Mountain Range. The area has a high number of ungulates, including caribou, moose, and elk, which provide sustenance to the community. Unfortunately, salmon have been impacted throughout the Yukon and populations have decreased in recent years. Learn more about Adanchilla Pauls Lepine and their work by following @adanchilla_designs on Instagram! (https://lnkd.in/gkKy_r9s) This holiday season, PGL is supporting the following nonprofits: Ontario: Feed the Need in Durham Alberta: The Mustard Seed Lower Mainland, BC: Greater Vancouver Food Bank Victoria, BC: Victoria Native Friendship Centre - VNFC If you are able, we encourage you to join us and support these important causes. Thank you for another great year together. Happy holidays!

PGL acknowledges the enduring reality laid out in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. We understand that the land where we work was cared for and protected long before settlers arrived. We are learning how to see our place in Canada through a different lens. We are committed to building a workplace that is respectful of, and safe for, First Nations, Inuit, and Métis People.
